How to Prevent Data Loss: 10 Simple Tips Every Computer User Should Follow
August 4, 2026Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices have become an essential part of modern businesses and homes. They store important documents, photos, videos, databases, surveillance footage, and backups in one centralized location. However, when a NAS device fails, accessing your files can suddenly become impossible.
The good news is that NAS data recovery is possible in many cases. Whether you use Synology, QNAP, WD My Cloud, Asustor, Buffalo, Netgear ReadyNAS, or TerraMaster, professional recovery techniques can often retrieve your valuable data.
In this guide, we’ll explain why NAS devices fail, what you should do immediately, and how to maximize the chances of recovering your important files.
What Is a NAS Device?
A Network Attached Storage (NAS) device is a dedicated storage system connected to your network. It allows multiple users to access, share, and back up files from different computers and mobile devices.
Businesses often use NAS systems for:
- File sharing
- Business backups
- CCTV storage
- Virtual machine storage
- Database storage
- Media libraries
- Office collaboration
Many NAS devices also use RAID configurations to improve performance and provide protection against drive failure.
Why Does NAS Storage Fail?
A NAS device can fail for several reasons, including:
- Hard drive failure
- Multiple RAID disk failures
- RAID controller issues
- Power outage
- Firmware corruption
- Accidental deletion
- Virus or ransomware attack
- NAS operating system failure
- Water or fire damage
- Human error during RAID rebuild
Identifying the cause is the first step toward successful recovery.
Signs Your NAS Is Failing
You may notice one or more of these warning signs:
- NAS not detected on the network
- Shared folders missing
- RAID degraded or offline
- Frequent system crashes
- Slow file access
- Clicking hard drives
- Failed RAID rebuild
- Login errors
- Files becoming inaccessible
If your NAS shows these symptoms, avoid making unnecessary changes to the device.
1. Stop Using the NAS
If your NAS has failed, stop writing new data immediately.
Continuing to use the storage system may overwrite recoverable files, especially if one or more drives have already failed.
2. Don’t Rebuild the RAID Immediately
Many NAS devices automatically suggest rebuilding the RAID after replacing a failed drive.
Avoid rebuilding until you’ve identified the exact cause of the failure.
An incorrect rebuild can overwrite RAID metadata and make professional recovery more difficult.
3. Don’t Initialize the NAS
Never click options such as:
- Initialize Storage
- Factory Reset
- Create New RAID
- Format Volume
These actions may erase important configuration information and reduce recovery success.
4. Label Drives Before Removing Them
If you need to remove the drives, label them according to their slot positions.
The order of drives is extremely important in RAID-based NAS recovery.
Mixing the drives can complicate the reconstruction process.
5. Check for Physical Issues
Inspect the NAS for:
- Failed cooling fans
- Power supply issues
- Loose cables
- Burn marks
- Hard drives making unusual noises
If a drive is clicking or grinding, stop using it immediately.
6. Protect Against Further Damage
Avoid:
- Repeatedly restarting the NAS
- Updating firmware
- Replacing multiple drives at once
- Running repair utilities
These actions can make recovery more complicated.
Can Data Be Recovered from a Failed NAS?
Yes, in many cases.
Professional NAS recovery specialists can often recover:
- Office documents
- Business databases
- Shared folders
- Family photos
- Videos
- Virtual machines
- CCTV recordings
- Backup archives
Recovery depends on the condition of the drives, RAID configuration, and actions taken after the failure.
What NOT to Do
If your NAS fails, avoid these common mistakes:
- Don’t initialize the NAS.
- Don’t format the storage volume.
- Don’t rebuild the RAID without diagnosis.
- Don’t swap drive positions.
- Don’t continue writing new data.
- Don’t repeatedly restart the device.
These actions can reduce the chances of successful recovery.
When Should You Contact a Professional?
Professional help is recommended if:
- The NAS won’t boot.
- RAID has failed.
- Multiple drives have errors.
- Important business data is inaccessible.
- The NAS suffered physical damage.
- The device contains irreplaceable files.
Professional engineers use specialized RAID recovery tools to reconstruct NAS storage safely.
